Keep a conference awake
after lunch

4 min readUses Survey analysisContent capture

The short version

  1. 1Plan for the 2pm slump. Coffee carries a conference through the morning. The afternoon needs a plan.
  2. 2Use one link for everything. Photos, polls and questions all live in the album attendees already opened.
  3. 3Read one answer out loud. Attendees reply more when they know someone is listening.

Five nudges, for the long afternoon

1Step 1 of 5

Give everyone one link on day one

Every extra app and QR code costs you attention. Put one album link on the badge and the first slide, and keep photos, polls and questions in it.

Ask attendees for a first photo while they queue for coffee: "Your view from the coffee line." Once someone has added a photo, every later nudge is one tap away.

Run a poll right after lunch

The first session after lunch is the hardest slot of the day. Open it with a quick, slightly spicy poll in the album before the speaker starts.

Show the result on screen and let the speaker react. Keep the poll to one question with three or four options.

Take questions all day

The silence after "any questions?" is usually nerves. Let people send questions into the album during the talk, and let the moderator pick the best ones.

You hear from quieter people, and nobody grabs the mic for a ten minute "more of a comment". Questions stay in the album, so later you can see which sessions got people talking.

Give the hallway its own prompts

Some of the best moments happen between sessions, and nobody photographs them. Try photo prompts in the album like "the best slide you've seen today" or "someone new you met".

Change the prompt every break so people open the album again. By the end of the day you have shots no photographer could get.

Read answers back, then ask one last thing

Before the closing session, look through the answers. Survey analysis in your workspace sorts written replies by theme and tone, so you don't have to read every one. Have the host read out one real answer and one poll result from the day.

Then close with one more question in the album: "What will you do differently on Monday?" It's often the best feedback you'll get.

Steal this

Ready lines for the emcee, the screens and the closing session.

Post-lunch poll

“Quick one before we start. Open the album and vote: what's slowing your team down most right now? A) Meetings B) Tools C) Hiring D) Honestly, lunch.”

Emcee line between sessions

“New prompt for this break: the best slide you've seen today. Add it to the album with the QR on screen, and we'll show a few before the closing talk.”

Closing question

“Last one, then you're free: what's one thing you'll do differently on Monday? Answer in the album, it's open till Wednesday.”

Fair questions

What are good conference engagement ideas?

Try a poll to open the first afternoon session, questions sent in during talks, a new photo prompt each break, and one answer read out before the close. Keep it all in one link.

How do you keep conference attendees engaged after lunch?

Open the first afternoon session with a quick poll, show the result live and let the speaker react. People who voted want to see who won.

Do attendees need to download a conference app?

No. Attendees scan a QR or open one link, and photos, polls and questions all live in the album in their browser.

How do you collect audience questions at a conference?

Let people send questions into the album during the talk, and have the moderator pick the best. You'll hear from quieter attendees too.

What do we do with all the answers afterwards?

Read them by theme and tone, pull a few real quotes, and use them in the debrief and next year's programme. The answers stay in the album.
